Boat Donations

The Ocean Research Project (ORP) relies on generous donations to sustain our vital research. One impactful way to contribute is by donating your boat. We make the donation process seamless, handling everything from paperwork to pickup, so you can rest assured your donation directly supports our mission. Plus, you'll be eligible for the maximum legal tax deduction.

What We Accept

We welcome new and well-maintained used boats in good working condition. Accepted vessels include:

  • Powerboats

  • Sailboats

  • Personal Watercraft (PWCs)

Important Notes:

  • Boats must have a valid title or documentation and be free of all encumbrances.

  • Vessels under contract with a broker are not eligible for donation.

Tax Information

In accordance with federal law:

  1. Tax Deduction Amount: Donors can only claim a deduction equal to the sale price of the boat as determined by ORP.

  2. IRS Forms:

    • ORP will notify donors immediately upon the sale of the boat.

    • We will provide IRS Form 8282 (Donee Information Return), which is also submitted to the IRS.

    • Donors must provide a Social Security number for this form.

Additionally, 100% of your donation supports our ocean research efforts.

Title Transfer Instructions

To donate your boat:

  1. Ensure the boat title is “clean and clear” of liens.

  2. Sign over the title to ORP.

  3. Write “charitable donation” or $0 in the sale amount field.

  4. Include the title for any accompanying trailer.

Once the transfer is complete:

  • ORP will finalize the title transfer.

  • You’ll receive IRS Form 8283 (Noncash Charitable Contributions) for your tax records.

  • After the boat is sold, you will be provided with IRS Form 8282 (Donner Information Return).

  • Boat donations are only deductible if you itemize deductions on your taxes.

Equipment Donations

In addition to boats, the Ocean Research Project (ORP) also accepts equipment donations. Many boaters upgrade their gear to the latest technology, but your old equipment can still make a significant impact. If it’s in good, working condition, there’s likely someone who can put it to great use.

Once we receive your donated items, they are listed on our eBay page as an additional way to raise funds for our research.
