Ocean Acidification
Ocean Acidification is directly linked to the burning of fossil fuels. When fossil fuels are burnt they release carbon into our atmosphere. Our oceans act like a giant carbon sink absorbing carbon from the air. It is the pCO2 that is changing the acidity levels of our oceans. Traditionally, when scientists conduct ocean acidification research they study the waters pH levels. Smithsonian wants to look directly at the amount of carbon in the ocean so they have built a special pCO2 sensor that we test and modify en route.
